VeloNotte La Fenice: Hamburg 1945-65

Welcome to the first ever bicycle-powered time machine! — by night, by bike with music!

Velonotte International invites you to cycle back through the Hamburg's epic journey -- from the devastation of wartime bombings to its dazzling rise as Germany’s powerhouse of economy, media, transport, and industry. In eight captivating chapters, we’ll trace Hamburg's remarkable re-birth as protagonist in the Wirtschaftswunder -- the German economic miracle.

Join us as we pedal through urban history, discovering courageous architecture masterpieces of Brutalism and International style, immersing into the incredibly rich media scene (Spiegel, Die Zeit, & more more more come from here), wrapped up by the dramatic showbiz stories (Alexandra, and the Beatles met here!) in this vibrant unforgettable night.

You will need a bike and a smartphone to participate in this evening bike tour. You are encouraged to dress like it's 1950/60s.

Created by urban historian and composer Dr.Sergey Nikitin-Rimsky, architect Christoph Schwarzkopf  & VeloNotte International.

Supported by ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, Architectuul, Teatro Instabile de Venexia.

If you don't have a bike, there is a well-developed bike sharing in Hamburg, -- just take your time to register and borrow a bike a little bit beforehand.

Expect a 13 kms relaxed ride to ponder the scenery and imagine that we're traveling in time. A nice workout for parents with kids too.

What is VeloNotte?

We explore cities by night and by bike.

We have a generous selection of scholars and architects to guide us.

VeloNotte has a scenario – beginning, middle and the end, like a good piece by Shakespeare.

From ghosts to bricks we weave it all into a compelling story.

More than 100.000 people joined our events worldwide.

Velonotte speakers featured Richard Rogers, Peter Ackroyd (London), Peter Eisenman, Cinzia de Lotto, Stefano Aloe (Verona), Ken Jackson (Columbia), Maria Vittoria Capitanucci (Politecnico di Milano), Jean-Louis Cohen (New York University), Franco Cardini (Normale di Pisa), Carlo Blasi (La Sapienza, Roma), Pier-Ostilio Rossi e Vittorio Vidotto (La Sapienza, Roma), Anna Bronovitskaya, Natalia Dushkina (Markhi).

The project is created and curated by Prof. Sergey Nikitin, urban historian, activist and educator.
